Here are some really interesting websites that you can use for all sorts of stuff!

Starlight:

También en Español

This website comes in both Spanish and English. Here you can find the Declaration in Defence of the Night Sky and the Right to Starlight.

This .pdf is offered in English, Français, and Español. It discusses the International Conference in Defense of the Quality of Night Sky and right to observe stars.

They also offer, “In accordance with the agreenment reached on the island of La Palma on April 20th, 2007, the Starlight Initiative invites all organizations, both public and private, to adopt the principles of the Starlight Declaration, expressing their support and voluntary commitment to preserve the quality of the night sky and to promote the cultural, scientific and environmental to the observation of the firmament.” And following the links this allows organizations to sign up and say that they will follow this example.

So overall, this site offers a lot of nifty information about the battle for starlight.

The International Dark-Sky Association:

This association works towards darker skies. You can join the organization or just look around and see many of their suggestions for lighting options and other things. This site is really chock full of useful information! Also, they offer a link to the National Geographic Article on Light Pollution. A definite read! Here is that site: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/11/light-pollution/klinkenborg-text/1

Dark Skies Awareness:

This site also has a lot of good information, including The Dark Skies Rangers Program.

They also include a very thourough section on news on this topic. Including a link to a .pdf of a very good article, “Lighting and Astronomy” by Christian B. Luginbuhl, Constance E. Walker, and Richard J. Wainscoat. You can find it at this link: http://www.darkskiesawareness.org/dsa-world-news-archive.php under the “Lighting and Astronomy” section.

There is also a very good section on Light Pollution and what exactly it is and how we can correct it.

Astronomers without Borders:

This site states: “Astronomers Without Borders is people meeting among the heavens. It is only natural to do so. After all, we all share the same sky.”

I couldn’t agree more!

This site goes into details on the many cornerstone projects currently being endeavored. This includes the details on Global Astronomy Month which looks like it will be extremely interesting.

Hello World!

21 01 2010

Hello everyone,

This is the new GLOBE at Night Blog.

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Amee and I will be keeping you up to date on all of the preparations and results of the GLOBE at Night program. I am currently a student in the USA but I am living in Chile for a while working as an Undergraduate Research Student for the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. While here I got involved in public outreach and the GLOBE at Night program as well as my research. This has all brought me to this blog.

Now, to tell you just a bit about GLOBE at Night.

First, take a look at this picture.

The Globe at Night

That is a lot of light…

Now, here is the website for GLOBE at Night. http://www.globeatnight.org

This website holds all of the information you could possibly need about the idea.

Pretty much, the program’s goal is to bring together students, teachers, parents, friends, and pretty much everyone in a worldwide effort to measure light pollution. This year we will be going outside to gaze at the stars between March 3rd and March 16th.

By performing this experiment yearly we are able to collect massive amounts of data that tell us more and more about the way that our night skies are being affected. Plus, it is a lot of fun to know that you are watching the stars on the same day that tons of other people are! Last year, approximately 15,000 people sent in their measurements and observations of the night sky above their heads’. This year, let’s make it even more!

Our skies are a precious thing and must be protected. If I had one wish in the world it would be that many more people in the world could see the Milky Way every night. The first step towards making this a reality is understanding how we are affecting the sky. You can help with this.

Keep an eye out for updates!

Hola,

The Globe at Night

Eso es un montón de luz!!! …

The Globe at Night
